The American recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara on December 10th, 2020 marked a decisive turning point in the evolution of the Sahara Question. In late 2020, the US legally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, and affirmed that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative is the only basis for a realistic, serious and credible solution to the regional dispute over the territory. Since its completion, critics of the US recognition have come out in full force: Some have said that this decision tramples on the rights of the Sahrawi people who live in Western Sahara, and they’ve called for the Biden administration to undo it.
US experts in law and international relations on Wednesday underlined the relevance of the US Proclamation on the Moroccan Sahara, noting that support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty has been for a long time supported by several US administrations.
A delegation of the Young Democrats of America (YDA), the youth wing of the US Democratic Party, called, on Friday from the city of Dakhla, on investors to gain a foothold in this region "which has a strong economic potential".
