Italy: Creation of Parliamentary Intergroup to Support Autonomy Plan in Moroccan Sahara

In response to the call of the Security Council and the international community, "the Kingdom has initiated a positive dynamic through the autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara, which is supported by various African, Arab, Asian and American countries", said the Italian parliamentarians.

"Our objective is to reinforce the efforts of the United Nations aimed at achieving a political and pragmatic solution, based on compromise", they explained, noting that "several European countries consider that the autonomy plan represents the most serious and credible solution to put an end to this dispute".

"Italy takes into consideration Morocco's efforts to achieve a just political solution, as Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said during his recent visit to Morocco", they recalled, adding that the "action of this group, which was created on the basis of a positive and proactive intention, is part of this perspective".

"The dispute over the Moroccan Sahara is one of the obstacles preventing the Maghreb from uniting and addressing, in a strong and united manner, the several common challenges facing the region in terms of security, terrorism and climate change", said the Italian MPs.

After the United States, several African, Arab and Asian countries, it was the turn of Germany, Spain and very recently the Netherlands to recognize the autonomy plan as being the only serious, credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute created from scratch over the Moroccan Sahara.
