Spanish Political Analyst: All UN Security Council Resolutions Confirm Algeria’s ‘Direct Involvement’

Despite the Algerian military regime's headlong rush, its responsibility in the Sahara issue is clear and total, Altamirano stresses in an Op-ed published Tuesday by the Spanish news website "lahoradeafrica.com".

The latest statements by the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, following the regional tour of his special envoy, Staffan de Mistura, calling on all parties, including Algeria, to resume negotiations, point to the overruns of the Algerian regime and its destabilizing role in the region, observes the Spanish political scientist.

By rejecting the format of the round tables adopted by the Security Council as a framework for dialogue to settle the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, Algeria is obstructing the peace process conducted under the aegis of the United Nations and is placing itself outside the will of the international community, he insists.

"Algeria never wants to assume its responsibilities. It sponsors and controls an armed band to harm the interests of Morocco", he says, noting that the supreme objective of the Algerian regime is to hinder any initiative aimed at advancing the negotiations towards a political solution on the basis of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

The United Nations, he says, is called upon to act firmly to oblige Algeria to assume its responsibilities and to contribute in good faith to the establishment of peace and stability in the region.
