Morocco/Algeria : Four Questions to Ricardo Sachez Serra, the Vice-Chairman of the Federation of Journalists of Peru.

The Vice-Chairperson of the Federation of Journalists of Peru, Ricardo Sachez Serra, considered the Algeria’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Morocco as «absurd, irresponsible and bellicose », in a recent interview.

  1. Were you surprised by the Algerian decision to cut diplomatic ties with Morocco?

Algeria’s decision to cut the diplomatic relations is absurd, irresponsible and bellicose. It was predictable after having inexplicably refused the countless gestures of friendship from Morocco and the King Mohammed VI, who wants peace with his neighbour and develop the Maghreb.

This inexplicable decision is an attempt to hide Algeria’s frustration following its diplomatic defeats on the international scene and the great loss of its influence in the region. Algeria’s failed foreign policy has a single objective, which is that of attacking the territorial integrity of Morocco to gain access to the Atlantic through its puppet, « polisario ».

  1. What are the real reasons that could justify, in your opinion, a such decision?

Algeria’s political, social and economic situation is disastrous and chaotic, which is why it uses external scarecrows to divert national and international public opinion from the internal problems, in addition to serious human rights violations.

Algeria deceives no one anymore. The arguments for severing relations are fallacious. In fact, there is an inexplicable schizophrenia and a bad habit of attacking or accusing a neighbour in an attempt to reunite the home front. But this agenda is now evident. The gigantic Hirak demonstrations, the self-determination of the Kabyles, the seasonal forest fires are the real problems of Algeria.

It is also worth mentioning that the colossal arms purchases made by Algeria deteriorate its own economy and endanger regional and world peace.

  1. Why does the Algerian government continue to ignore Morocco’s outstretched hand ?

Because it has an interest in maintaining this artificial conflict. The Algerian Government wants to make people forget Morocco’s contribution to Algeria’s independence and seeks to hide Morocco’s growing prestige in the world as well as its diplomatic successes in favour of peace and security. Algeria in playing the victim of its own problems by blaming Rabat.

  1. How does the future of Morocco/Algeria relations look like?

I see gloomy prospects, because the spirit that prevails in Algeria is bellicose. If Algeria does decide to adopt a rational policy in the region, the international community has an obligation to act.

We must highlight Morocco’s pacifist and conciliatory spirit. Morocco also avoids falling into the trap of the Algerian government, whose incomprehensible gesture of rupture did not win any support or solidarity from anyone.

In fact, Algeria is more isolated than ever. The world must be attentive to any bellicose adventure of Algeria to hide its internal problems.
